Rory McIlroy Faces Challenges at Tour Championship Following Chip Mistakes

<p>Rory McIlroy was 2-under par entering the third hole of the second round of the Tour Championship at East Lake when he encountered difficulties. While chipping uphill from about 15 yards from the hole, McIlroy did not apply enough power to his chip, causing the ball to bounce and roll back to his feet.</p><p>After taking a quick practice swing, McIlroy attempted the shot again but repeated the mistake, resulting in the ball rolling back to him once more. On his third attempt, he successfully hit the green but ended up with a double-bogey on the hole, impacting his chances of winning the tournament's $10 million purse.</p><p>During the broadcast, an ESPN+ commentator remarked, "To get cute twice in a row, unbelievable, you just have to err long, especially when it’s your second time." ESPN’s Andy North noted that McIlroy tends to make forced mistakes, which differentiates him from Scottie Scheffler, the current No. 1 player in the world.</p><p>North stated, "It is very frustrating. He’s such a talented player. When he’s on, there’s maybe nobody better than him. He just hits so many quality shots but you can’t keep short-siding yourself, you can’t keep making mistakes with wedges. You look at the difference between the No. 1 and No. 2 players in the world, Scottie doesn’t make a lot of forced mistakes like Rory does."</p><p>McIlroy finished the day at 1-under par and 3-under for the tournament, placing him tied for 22nd out of 30 players. At the time of this writing, he was six strokes behind the leader, Ryan Gerard, who was at 9-under par.</p>
