Democratic Candidate Defends Hasan Piker Amid Party Criticism

<p>Pennsylvania state Rep. Chris Rabb, a Democratic candidate, defended streamer Hasan Piker on Thursday as some Democrats distanced themselves from him due to his controversial comments. Piker previously suggested that the U.S. deserved the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.</p><p>Rabb, who represents Northwest Philadelphia, is one of several democratic socialists running in the upcoming November elections. His defense comes as prominent Democrats criticize Piker for his far-left views.</p><p>"This is what the institutionalists are focusing their efforts on now: Disavowing Hasan Piker," Rabb tweeted on Friday.</p><p>In his tweet, Rabb questioned why the focus was on Piker instead of other issues, stating, "Not White Christian nationalists? Not the broligarchs? Not the AI overlords? Nope, the guy encouraging young people to use their collective political power for good." He concluded with a profane remark against the criticism.</p><p>Rabb had previously appeared with Piker at an event in West Philadelphia in April and acknowledged that he would face backlash for associating with him. He described the criticism as a "double standard" based on his identity as a Black progressive.</p><p>Rabb's defense contrasts with a growing list of Democrats who have condemned Piker. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., labeled Piker's comments about American Jews as "dangerous and anti-Semitic." Jeffries stated, "I’ve just addressed Hasan Piker’s comments as it relates to the Jewish community as forcefully as I can, and I will continue to do that."</p><p>On Tuesday, Rep. Josh Gottheimer, D-N.J., called for a bipartisan resolution to condemn Piker and conservative podcaster Candace Owens. Gottheimer stated, "Hatred is hatred, period," and criticized Piker for perpetuating harmful stereotypes about Jewish Americans.</p><p>Rep. Brad Schneider, D-Ill., also accused Piker of "victim-blaming" American Jews and warned that Democrats risk losing credibility if they condemn right-wing figures while supporting those who espouse hate within their own ranks.</p><p>Rabb is set to face independent candidate Dennis Mahoney in November for Pennsylvania’s 3rd Congressional District, which is heavily Democratic. He is favored to succeed retiring Rep. Dwight Evans, D-Pa.</p>
