Michelle Obama Discusses Life as an Empty Nester on Podcast

<p>Former first lady Michelle Obama stated that she does not miss having her daughters at home, emphasizing her preference for their independence as adults. Obama made these comments on her "IMO" podcast while speaking with comedian Jon Stewart and her brother Craig Robinson about the experience of becoming an empty nester.</p><p>During the discussion, Stewart shared his feelings about missing the energy of having his children around. Obama responded, "I don’t miss them. I don’t. I love them. I’m gonna see them tonight for dinner. I love them." She noted that her husband, Barack Obama, had an emotional reaction when their daughters went to college, while she felt relieved, stating, "Now Friday nights aren’t wrecked with terror and fear about ‘Where are you? Where are you?’"</p><p>Obama expressed her enjoyment of her daughters' growth and independence, saying, "You know I love their emancipation and growth." When Stewart asked if she missed being a parent, she replied, "I’m good." Robinson commented that his sister was simply "different," and Obama added, "I love my schedule. I have a great schedule and it’s all mine."</p><p>She suggested that fathers might have a different perspective on parenting, as they may miss parts of the experience. "But I think fathers can be that way because you weren’t there from six to nine, and you missed a lot of it," she said. "I mean, I’ve had so much quality time with my children."</p><p>Malia and Sasha Obama were 10 and 7 years old, respectively, when their father was elected president in 2008. They lived in the White House throughout his two terms before going to college. Obama has previously mentioned her efforts to prioritize her daughters' lives during her husband's presidency to provide them with a normal childhood.</p><p>Both daughters are now adults and have largely maintained private lives outside of their parents’ political spotlight. Obama’s comments come as she continues to host "IMO," a video podcast with her brother, Craig Robinson, where they discuss their experiences and offer advice alongside celebrity guests. Despite her candid remarks in the latest episode, Obama has previously spoken positively about her daughters, expressing pride in the women they have become.</p>
