Hegseth Denies Reports of 2028 Presidential Run

<p>Secretary of War Pete Hegseth has denied a report suggesting he has been discussing a potential 2028 presidential run, calling the claim “100% false” and accusing NBC News of ignoring his denial.</p><p>“100% false. We told NBC that, but they just lie w/ anonymous ‘sources,’” Hegseth wrote on X on Friday. This response followed an NBC News report that stated Hegseth had discussed the possibility of running for president with his wife, friends, and colleagues over the past several months.</p><p>Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell also commented, stating to Newsweek, “Secretary Hegseth is not running for President, and his main priority is leading the War Department. All other speculation is foolish.” Despite these denials, the NBC report has fueled speculation about Hegseth’s political future, particularly after he traveled to Iowa earlier this month to campaign for Rep. Zach Nunn (R-IA).</p><p>Hegseth attended the Iowa State Fair, which the Pentagon described as a personal-capacity trip to support Nunn, who is seeking reelection. The appearance attracted attention as Iowa traditionally plays a significant role in the Republican presidential nominating process. NBC's Courtney Kube noted that the fair is a venue where candidates showcase themselves ahead of a potential run, and Hegseth received a warm reception at both the Iowa and Kentucky events.</p><p>This Iowa appearance marked Hegseth’s second campaign-related trip this year, following a visit to Kentucky in May to support Ed Gallrein, a Trump-endorsed primary challenger who defeated Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY).</p><p>Hegseth’s national profile as a former Fox News host and his role as a prominent Cabinet official under President Donald Trump have contributed to speculation regarding a 2028 run. However, Hegseth has firmly denied any intentions to seek the presidency. This speculation arises as Republicans are increasingly considering candidates for the post-Trump era, with Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio frequently mentioned as potential candidates.</p><p>Neither Vance nor Rubio has formally announced a 2028 presidential campaign. Vance has stated he will make decisions about his political future after the 2026 midterm elections, while Rubio has indicated support for Vance if he seeks the Republican nomination.</p><p>Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) has also expressed interest in a future presidential campaign, stating, “It’s no secret that I want to be president.” Trump responded positively, saying, “Yeah, I would say that he’s very talented. He’s a very good friend of mine. I think he might do that. Yeah, he’s a very talented — he’s a talented guy.”</p><p>Before his tenure at Fox News, Hegseth briefly sought the Republican nomination for the U.S. Senate in Minnesota in 2012 but withdrew from the race. Currently, Hegseth states his focus is elsewhere, saying, “My only job: Make @DeptofWar Great Again.”</p>
