Abdul El-Sayed Addresses Media at Michigan Democratic Convention Amid Controversies

LANSING, Mich. — Michigan U.S. Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed addressed the media during the state Democratic Party Nominating Convention on Saturday. He faced questions regarding his relationship with online personality Hasan Piker and his stance on Israel and Gaza, which have created tensions with some Democrats, particularly Jewish ones. El-Sayed responded to reporters, stating, "We’re in the state of Michigan. If you want to make this race about a streamer in California, I just think you’re missing the boat. This is about affordability in Michigan. This is about seeing a doctor in Michigan. This is about Donald Trump’s disastrous policies in Michigan. That’s what I’m focused on right now." Four reporters inquired about Piker, with whom El-Sayed campaigned during his primary race. He referred to Piker as "a streamer from California" and emphasized that discussions about him were irrelevant to his campaign. El-Sayed stated, "I don’t ever want my comments to hurt anybody’s feelings. It’s important to me that people understand that I take serious the pain of all communities in this state. But I don’t want to have a conversation about a Twitch streamer in California. This is not a serious conversation." Piker has made controversial statements, including remarks about 9/11 and comments perceived as antisemitic. El-Sayed was also asked about his previous comments regarding an attack on a Michigan synagogue, which had drawn criticism from members of his party, including Secretary of State Dana Nessel. El-Sayed acknowledged that his comments might have been misconstrued and offered an apology, stating, "To anybody who feels like my comments may have been hurtful, I’m really sorry. That was not my intention. We condemned that terrorist attack. We condemned it outright." He stressed the need for unity within the Democratic Party. The convention, attended by Michigan Democrats, focused on themes of unity despite the controversies surrounding El-Sayed.
