Truck Strikes Pedestrians During Bicycle Festival in Colorado, Resulting in One Fatality

At least one person was killed and several others were injured after a pickup truck drove onto a sidewalk during an annual bicycle festival in Colorado on Saturday morning. The Chevrolet pickup truck struck multiple pedestrians at 11:45 a.m. and continued until it collided with a tree in Old Town Fort Collins, Colorado, according to the Fort Collins Police Services (FCPS). Police do not believe the pedestrians were intentionally targeted in the incident. Six individuals, including the driver, were transported to the hospital with various injuries, though their conditions were not immediately available. One unidentified person was later pronounced dead, FCPS reported. Fort Collins Police Chief Jeff Swoboda described the incident as a tragic day for the community, acknowledging the impact on those involved, witnesses, and responders. He expressed appreciation for the quick response of officers and emergency partners, as well as community members who assisted during the incident. The fatal crash occurred less than a mile from the Tour de Fat bicycle parade, which attracts large crowds annually. Police noted that there were numerous bystanders and patrol officers present at the time of the collision due to the event. The FCPS Collision Reconstruction and Scene Handling Team is investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash, including whether impairment was a factor. Initial investigations indicated that the truck driver reversed from a parking spot on Mountain Avenue and struck another vehicle before driving forward onto the sidewalk, hitting multiple pedestrians before colliding with a tree. Authorities closed the crash site for approximately six hours while investigators worked at the scene.
