Police Seek Public's Help in Identifying Man Who Found $30 at Walmart

Police in Albany, Georgia, requested assistance from the public to identify a man who found $30 on the floor of a Walmart and did not return it to store employees. The request, made on August 18 via a Facebook post, included a photo of the individual. The Albany Police Department stated, "An individual dropped $30.00 on the ground while shopping. This individual picked up the money and did not turn it in to the employees." The post prompted a significant response on social media, with many users criticizing the police for focusing resources on this case. One user compared the situation to finding a larger sum of money, stating, "When I was out with some friends I found a bank envelope in a parking lot that appeared to be from a withdrawal and it had $8,000 in it. Now that is something you turn in not $30 found inside a Walmart." Another user questioned the police's intentions, asking, "Wait… you want to find this man because he didn’t report to yall about finding it?" Following the public outcry, the police later announced that the man had returned the money to its rightful owner, who chose not to pursue charges. The Albany Police Department confirmed, "The male involved in the incident returned the money to the victim. The victim initially wished to pursue charges, but after the money was returned, advised that they no longer wished to press charges." Under Georgia law, taking possession of lost property without attempting to return it could be considered theft.
