Tennis Players Express Concerns Over Ball Quality

Tennis players have increasingly voiced concerns about the quality of tennis balls used in professional tournaments, particularly since the COVID-19 pandemic. Many players, including 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic and Venus Williams, have noted that the balls have become inconsistent, with some losing quality more quickly than others. Djokovic stated, "We all agreed that, since COVID, something has changed," referring to the material and performance of the balls. Players like Jessica Pegula and Taylor Fritz have also highlighted the issue, mentioning that different brands and manufacturing locations contribute to variations in quality. Pegula noted that balls often do not last as long and can feel different depending on where they are produced. The frequent change of ball brands across tournaments has been a common complaint among players. Factors such as weather and court surfaces also affect how the balls perform. Brendan McIntyre, head of US Open communications, expressed confidence in the quality of Wilson balls used at the tournament, while manufacturers like Dunlop and Wilson have not publicly addressed the complaints. Eric Babolat, CEO of Babolat, explained that the shift in manufacturing standards from European to American practices has contributed to the current issues, with more synthetic materials being used in production. Players are encouraged to adapt to these changes, as they are considered part of the game.
