House Republicans Demand Answers from New Jersey Governor on Noncitizen Voter Registration

<p>A coalition of House Republicans is intensifying its inquiry into New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill regarding her response to questions about the state's noncitizen voter-registration issue. Lawmakers have expressed dissatisfaction with Sherrill's reply, which they claim deflected criticism onto President Donald Trump.</p><p>Rep. Jeff Van Drew, a member of the Republican Study Committee from New Jersey, characterized Sherrill's response as "snarky" and politicized, stating that it largely avoided addressing the lawmakers' inquiries.</p><p>"The response that we got from the governor was almost like she took a political mailer and embossed it upon her official letterhead," Van Drew said. He added that the response was inadequate for the governor of New Jersey.</p><p>Lawmakers' original questions focused on how the registration failure occurred, its potential consequences, and measures New Jersey would implement to prevent future issues. A letter dated July 24 from numerous RSC members, led by Van Drew and Chairman August Pfluger, posed 12 specific questions regarding the registration failure and its implications.</p><p>Sherrill indicated that notifications had been sent to affected residents, but Van Drew stated that her overall response did not adequately address Congress's concerns.</p><p>"We're not done with this," Van Drew stated, announcing plans for a hearing as chairman of the House Judiciary Committee’s Oversight Subcommittee, where expert witnesses are expected to testify.</p><p>Van Drew is collaborating with the full committee under Chairman Jim Jordan to obtain the requested information from Lt. Gov. Dale Caldwell, New Jersey's elections chief.</p><p>"If there's a complete lack of cooperation after we build up a case, there is a possibility, it's not definite," Van Drew noted, adding that subpoenas may be considered if cooperation is not forthcoming.</p><p>Sherrill defended her administration while criticizing Congress and the Republican-backed SAVE America Act. She accused Washington Republicans of prioritizing political gain over election protection and noted that several signatories of the letter had previously challenged electoral votes after the 2020 election.</p><p>Sherrill also contested the assertion that the SAVE America Act would have prevented the registration error, urging lawmakers to familiarize themselves with the legislation they have supported. She raised concerns about privacy and potential abuse of power related to proposals for a centralized voter registry.</p><p>Van Drew remarked on New Jersey's motor-voter law, which allows for automatic voter registration, stating that it has led to illegal registrations and voting by noncitizens.</p><p>The White House responded to Sherrill’s criticisms, labeling her comments as "laughable" given her party's previous denial of noncitizen voting in elections.</p><p>Sherrill's spokesperson, Sean Higgins, countered that the governor's response demonstrated transparency and accountability in addressing the 2023 error, while accusing Republicans of engaging in political games. He highlighted Van Drew's campaign's past association with an operative convicted of voter fraud.</p><p>Pfluger criticized Sherrill's response, claiming it focused more on political theater than on answering their questions, and emphasized the need for the passage of the SAVE America Act to ensure election integrity.</p><p>Rep. Christopher Smith, the most senior member of the New Jersey delegation, called for complete transparency from Trenton and a corrective path forward, asserting that secure elections are fundamental to democracy.</p><p>The inquiry will proceed along multiple avenues, with Van Drew's subcommittee preparing a hearing, the Judiciary Committee seeking additional state records, and lawmakers considering further actions as executive branch scrutiny continues.</p>
