NASA's Nancy Grace Roman telescope was launched from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida on Sunday morning. The telescope is designed to explore dark energy, black holes, and other cosmic phenomena, with a field of vision 100 times larger than that of the Hubble and James Webb space telescopes. The mission includes a 100-day journey to a location approximately one million miles from Earth, where it will begin to study exoplanets, or planets outside our solar system.
Nicky Fox, a NASA administrator, stated, "Roman is going to change the way we look at the Universe." Following the launch, Jackie Townsend, a project manager for the telescope, described the event as "glorious" and noted that the launch trajectory was successful. Approximately 30 minutes post-launch, the Roman telescope successfully separated from its SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket.
Fox indicated that the telescope could discover tens of thousands of new exoplanets, emphasizing NASA's goal of answering the question of whether life exists beyond Earth. Astronomer Jenifer Millard explained that the telescope will operate four times farther from Earth than the Moon, minimizing interference from infrared light emitted by the Moon and Earth.
The Roman telescope is named after Nancy Grace Roman, NASA's first chief astronomer, who played a significant role in the development of the Hubble Space Telescope. The new telescope is expected to enhance our understanding of the Universe, particularly regarding dark energy and dark matter, which together are believed to constitute about 95% of the Universe.
NASA aims for the telescope to have a primary operational lifespan of five years, with a goal of extending its mission to ten years. Fox noted that the Roman telescope will allow scientists to create detailed cosmic maps and investigate the distribution of galaxies over time, contributing to the understanding of dark matter and dark energy.
