U.S. State Department Issues Travel Advisory for Israel Due to Security Concerns

<p>The U.S. State Department has advised Americans planning travel to Israel to reconsider their plans due to warnings of terrorism and unrest. The department has reissued a Level 3 advisory, "Reconsider Travel," indicating that the security situation in Israel is complex and can change rapidly.</p><p>The advisory states that violence can occur without warning and highlights that increased regional tensions may lead airlines to cancel or limit flights to and from Israel. Certain areas in Israel are under a Level 4 advisory, "Do Not Travel," due to armed conflict.</p><p>Americans are specifically advised against traveling to regions north of Route 85 to Route 90 south to Route 87, within seven miles of the Gaza Strip, or within 1.5 miles of the Israel-Egypt border, with the exception of the Taba border crossing.</p><p>U.S. government employees in Israel are also restricted from traveling to these areas, and additional movement restrictions may be implemented with little notice due to security concerns. An update on August 26 indicated that family members may now accompany U.S. government employees working in Israel.</p><p>For those who choose to travel to Israel, officials recommend staying aware of surroundings, avoiding demonstrations and crowds, and following instructions from security and emergency officials. Travelers should also familiarize themselves with the location of the nearest bomb shelter or other secure shelter and have an emergency exit plan that does not rely on U.S. government assistance.</p><p>Additionally, the advisory suggests obtaining travel insurance that includes coverage for evacuation assistance, medical care, and trip cancellations.
