Scottie Scheffler Wins Tour Championship After Strong Final Round

<p>Scottie Scheffler shot a bogey-free 66 during Saturday’s third round at the Tour Championship but appeared frustrated throughout the round.</p><p>After missing a putt at East Lake, Scheffler’s emotions were captured on a hot mic.</p><p>"How does it go back that way? F---ing grain’s over here," Scheffler said.</p><p>His inability to convert longer birdie attempts left him three shots behind Viktor Hovland entering Sunday’s final round.</p><p>However, in the final round, Scheffler shot a 4-under 66 to finish at 16-under and win the Tour Championship for the second time. His Sunday score tied the low round of the day, as no other player in the final three pairings shot better than 1 over.</p><p>When Scheffler's tap-in par on the final hole dropped, the tournament effectively ended, despite four players still on the course.</p><p>Scheffler quickly demonstrated to the field that they would need to outperform him to win the Tour Championship.</p><p>Scheffler nearly made an ace on the 211-yard par-3 second hole and tapped in for birdie. Meanwhile, Hovland made bogey on No. 1, and Ryan Gerard, who began Sunday one shot behind Hovland, doubled the opening hole.</p><p>Within minutes, Scheffler had reduced a three-shot deficit to one.</p><p>Scheffler birdied Nos. 2, 4, 8, 10, 13, and 16, with bogeys at Nos. 7 and 14. His birdie at No. 13 gave him the outright lead for the first time in the tournament.</p><p>The bogey at No. 14 briefly tied him with Hovland, while Chris Gotterup had a birdie putt that could have moved him within one shot of the leaders but missed it. Gotterup then made bogey at the par-3 15th after a poor chip, and another bogey at 16 ended his chances.</p><p>This set the stage for a showdown between Scheffler and Hovland.</p><p>Scheffler's birdie at No. 16 extended his lead to two. Hovland had a chance to respond, but his birdie putt caught the lip and stayed out, leading to visible frustration.</p><p>Hovland’s last real chance ended at No. 17, where he made another bogey.</p><p>Hovland finished with a 2-over 72, ending solo second at 13 under, three shots behind Scheffler. Gerard finished solo third at 12 under, one shot ahead of a seven-way tie for fourth that included Rory McIlroy.</p><p>Hovland had previously led on Sunday, making 141 feet, 3 inches of putts in the opening round, including seven from at least 10 feet, but struggled in the final round.</p><p>His longest made putt on Sunday was a 6-foot par save, and he missed several birdie attempts.</p><p>Hovland’s No. 13 bogey brought about controversy when CBS showed a replay suggesting his club may have touched the sand during his backswing on a bunker shot. PGA Tour rules official Mark Dusbabek stated that the Tour received inquiries about the shot but could not confirm a penalty, which would have been two strokes under Rule 12.2b.</p><p>A penalty would have impacted the payout significantly, moving Gerard into solo second and dropping Hovland into an eight-way tie for third.</p><p>Scheffler's victory also avenged his earlier loss to Hovland at the Travelers Championship.</p><p>This win marked Scheffler's third victory in 2026, along with 13 top-five finishes in 20 starts. He had previously won The American Express and FedEx St. Jude Championship.</p><p>Although he did not win a major this season, the Tour Championship win strengthened his case for the PGA Tour Player of the Year award. Wyndham Clark, who won three times this season including the U.S. Open, is his main competitor.</p><p>The win was also significant for American golf, as Europe won last year’s Ryder Cup and non-Americans won three of the four majors this season. Scheffler's performance serves as a reminder of his status as a leading player in high-stakes tournaments.</p>
