William Jewell College Football Player MicahJo Barnett Dies at 20 After Scoring Touchdown

MicahJo Barnett, a football player for William Jewell College in Missouri, died during a game on August 29 after experiencing a medical emergency shortly after scoring a touchdown. He was 20 years old. Barnett collapsed on the sidelines during the first quarter of the game against Fort Lewis College at Greene Stadium in Liberty, Missouri, according to reports. Liberty Police Captain Nathan Mulch stated that medical personnel were present and the player was quickly transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The cause of death has not yet been reported. The game was paused while Barnett received treatment and was subsequently canceled after his death was confirmed. Students at William Jewell College organized a vigil in his honor on the same night. University president Dr. Dave Van Horn expressed condolences, stating, "Our hearts are heavy, and we appreciate all of the support that we have received from the greater community ... We join with the greater Liberty community ... [to mourn] the passing of MicahJo Barnett." The college also issued a statement offering thoughts and prayers to Barnett's family and the community. Fort Lewis College athletic director Shawn Jakubowski extended condolences from his team, saying, "Our hearts are with [MicahJo’s] family, friends, teammates, coaches, and everyone at William Jewell during this incredibly difficult time." Barnett was recognized as a 2025-26 Academic All-Great Lakes Valley Conference honoree and led his team in rushing last season. He is survived by his six siblings and parents.
