Dale Sanders, a 91-year-old hiker, has reclaimed his record as the oldest person to complete the Appalachian Trail, finishing the 2,193-mile trek that runs from Springer Mountain in Georgia to Mount Katahdin in Maine. Sanders, who has fallen 71 times during his journey, including six hard falls, completed the trail on August 31, 2026, after starting on September 6 in West Virginia. The Appalachian Trail Conservancy defines a thru-hike as completing all sections of the trail within a year, allowing for breaks.
Sanders, known by his trail name 'Grey Beard,' first set the record in 2017 at age 82. He lost the title to his friend M.J. Eberhart four years later but announced his plan to reclaim it shortly thereafter. Despite facing challenges during his latest hike, including a fall that led to a brief hospitalization, Sanders remained determined. He stated, "I am 91, so I’m blazing new ground hiking long distances like this."
During his hike, Sanders experienced various difficulties, including a fall in June while descending Killington Mountain in Vermont, which resulted in scrapes but no broken bones. After a health scare in Maine, he was cleared to continue hiking, with encouragement from his wife.
Sanders noted that some of his most enjoyable moments occurred in Pennsylvania, where he appreciated the well-maintained trails and support from 'trail angels' who provided refreshments. He has gained a following on social media, which has motivated him to inspire others beyond just reclaiming his record. Meredith Ewenson, who met Sanders during a hike, remarked on his impressive mobility and the inspiration he provides to others.
Born in Kentucky in 1935, Sanders has set multiple age-related records, including being the oldest person to paddle the entire length of the Mississippi River. His latest adventure included overcoming obstacles such as downed trees and steep scrambles, demonstrating his resilience and determination.
