The U.S. had targeted two Iranian rocket launchers on Larak Island on Sunday, reportedly killing three individuals, as the U.S. believed Tehran intended to launch rockets carrying sea mines into the Hormuz Strait.

While neither side seems to be pursuing a full-scale war, both have indicated readiness to respond to further attacks. President Donald Trump stated in an interview with Fox News on Monday, "We are going to hit them hard," emphasizing that there would be a response to Iran's attacks on U.S. military bases in the region.
Analysts view the U.S. attack on Larak Island as an attempt to break a deadlock rather than a change in strategy. Ali Vaez, deputy program director at the International Crisis Group, noted, "By hitting the launchers rather than broader Iranian military infrastructure, the U.S. appears to be punishing a specific behavior rather than, at least for now, broadening its war aims."
Jason Brodsky, policy director of United Against Nuclear Iran, commented that the Trump administration's goal was to further degrade Tehran's capabilities to mine the Strait of Hormuz while focusing on economic coercive measures as the midterm elections approach.
Washington has intensified pressure on Iran's economy with "secondary sanctions" that penalize nations and businesses purchasing Iranian crude. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated on Monday, during the Group of 20 finance ministers' meeting, that Iran was "lashing out kinetically" due to the impact of the new sanctions on its economy.
In remarks from the Oval Office on Monday, Trump mentioned that Iran's financial systems, armed forces, and governing body have largely degraded, adding, "It doesn't mean we won't smack them to see what happens."
The ongoing conflict, now in its seventh month, has disrupted global energy supplies and affected financial markets. The international oil benchmark Brent surpassed $90 a barrel amid renewed tensions, last trading at $91.08 on Tuesday, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate futures increased slightly to $86.65 per barrel.
Brodsky remarked that this situation is fundamentally an endurance contest, noting Trump's unpredictability, which may lead Iran to respond more aggressively militarily as economic pressure increases.
