Israeli Forces Demolish Homes in West Bank Amid EU Discussions on Settlement Goods

Israeli forces have demolished homes in the occupied West Bank, specifically in Birzeit and Nablus, while settlers reportedly attacked residents in the village of Burqa. The demolitions occurred as Ireland advocates for sanctions on goods from Israeli settlements during an informal meeting of European Union ministers this week. In Birzeit, Israeli soldiers demolished two residential buildings, citing a lack of required building permits, according to the Palestinian news agency Wafa. In Nablus, a bulldozer was used to raze a two-storey house and a three-storey building under construction. In Burqa, video verified by Al Jazeera depicted a group of settlers raiding the village and clashing with Palestinians, with witnesses reporting assaults, attempts to set vehicles on fire, and theft of livestock. The United Nations human rights office indicated last month that settler violence is at an unprecedented level, with new settlements being approved and settlers often acting in coordination with the Israeli army against Palestinian communities. The issue of settler violence and settlement expansion will be discussed at a two-day meeting of EU foreign ministers in Ireland starting Tuesday. Ireland, which currently holds the rotating presidency of the Council of the EU, is seeking collective action from member states, building on discussions from July that considered options such as an import licensing system, prohibitive tariffs, or a complete ban on settlement goods. EU regulations mandate that goods from illegal West Bank settlements be labeled as originating from occupied territory rather than Israel, but a trade ban has not been implemented, leaving decisions to individual states. Neale Richmond, an Irish minister of state, stated that Israel's actions in Palestinian territories and its failure to curb settler violence violate international law, expressing concern over the complicity of certain EU politicians with the Israeli government.
