German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul emphasized the need for Germany to diversify its energy sources amid the crisis in the Strait of Hormuz and its effects on fuel prices. He stated that Algeria could become an important supplier of gas in the future.
Wadephul made these comments during a press conference in Algiers on September 1, 2026, as part of his trip to North Africa. He noted that diversification of energy sources is essential, especially given the current pressures on energy supplies.
The minister described Algeria as a "reliable partner" that is already supplying gas to EU countries such as Italy and Spain. He highlighted the importance of securing critical raw materials and energy security through resilient supply chains in the region.
Wadephul also mentioned Algeria's potential as a future supplier of green hydrogen, which could enhance the partnership further. He pointed out that Germany's gas storage facilities are currently only about 50% full, with a government-mandated target of 70% by November deemed unlikely to be met. Last year, storage facilities were reported to be 67% full at the same time. Despite the low levels, the government has stated that there is no immediate danger of a gas shortage.
During his visit, Wadephul met with Algerian Energy Minister Mohamed Arkab to discuss negotiating long-term contracts for gas supplies. He is also expected to meet with Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and representatives from German companies.
Wadephul's visit follows a recent incident involving an explosives-laden drone discovered near a Ukrainian cargo plane at Leipzig airport. The German government has not officially attributed the incident but there is speculation regarding Russian involvement, which Russia has denied. Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated that an investigation into the incident is nearing completion, and a clear response will be coordinated with NATO and EU allies.
Additionally, the head of Germany's IG Metall union has criticized Volkswagen's management for considering layoffs and potential plant closures.
