Springfield Student Dies by Suicide After Being Fitted with ICE Ankle Monitor

A 20-year-old student at Wright State University, Pierre Damas Bel, died by suicide on Interstate 70 on August 31, 2026, after being fitted with an ankle monitor by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Bel, who was a new student at the university, received the monitor in July following the termination of Temporary Protected Status for Haitians. Community advocates reported that he faced teasing from fellow students regarding the monitor. Pastor Carl Ruby of Central Christian Church stated on social media that Bel jumped in front of a semi-truck after being subjected to ridicule. Bel had expressed feelings of shame and humiliation in an Instagram post, stating, "I came to this country to pursue my education. I didn’t come here to commit a crime or hurt anyone." The Ohio State Highway Patrol reported that Bel parked his vehicle on the shoulder of the highway before walking into traffic, where he was struck by a truck and pronounced dead at the scene. Bel was a high-achieving student, a member of the National Honor Society, and a varsity soccer player. His death has prompted local community members and advocates to gather in protest against federal immigration enforcement practices affecting the Haitian community. Hundreds of Haitians in the area have been fitted with ankle monitors, leading to complaints about their impact on daily life and employment.
