<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><a href="https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/tag/apple/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Apple</a> Maps updated its map on September 1, 2026, to reflect President <a href="https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/tag/donald-trump/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Donald Trump’s</a> renaming of Lake Ontario to “Lake America.” This change follows a similar update by <a href="https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/tag/google/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Google</a>, which altered its maps over the weekend.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The executive order signed by Trump last week renames Lake Ontario, which is located in both the United States and Canada, to “Lake America.” Apple Maps now displays “Lake America” on the U.S. side of the lake, while the name “Lake Ontario” remains on the Canadian side.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Interior Secretary <a href="https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/tag/doug-burgum/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Doug Burgum</a> stated that Trump directly contacted Apple to request the update after signing the executive order.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This update follows a previous instance where Apple was slower than Google to reflect a name change when Trump renamed the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Trump’s decree is binding only for the U.S. government and does not affect foreign governments, international bodies, or private companies, although they may choose to update names at their discretion. Google stated that it updated the name “to reflect name changes in official government sources.”</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In his executive order, Trump referenced a prior executive order from his second term, titled “Restoring Names that Honor American Greatness,” and argued that the renaming was justified by the U.S.'s efforts in protecting and maintaining the Great Lakes.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The renaming occurred amid strained relations with Canada, following Trump's imposition of 50% tariffs on various Canadian goods on July 20, 2026, which were set to take effect in mid-August. Negotiations to prevent the tariffs collapsed just hours before the deadline on August 21, resulting in tariffs affecting nearly $20 billion in Canadian exports.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The <em>Washington Examiner</em> has reached out to Apple for further comment.</p>
