William Jewell College football player MicahJo Barnett dies after collapsing during game

A William Jewell College football player, MicahJo Barnett, collapsed during a game and later died. Interim president Drew Van Horn stated that Barnett did not have any underlying health conditions. The incident occurred during the season opener against Fort Lewis College on Saturday, shortly after Barnett scored a touchdown. Emergency medical personnel on-site attended to him immediately and attempted resuscitation. Barnett was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. An autopsy will be conducted by the medical examiner to determine the cause of death, according to Liberty, Mo., police Capt. Nathan Mulch. Van Horn indicated that he would wait for the autopsy results before deciding on any further investigation into the circumstances surrounding Barnett's death. The family has requested privacy during this time. Barnett was 20 years old and entering his third season with the team. He had previously suffered an injury that cut his 2025 season short but had recorded 366 rushing yards and four touchdowns that year. Over two seasons, he played in 13 games and scored six total touchdowns. A native of Liberty, Barnett was a standout player at Liberty North High School, where he contributed to a state championship with 1,450 all-purpose yards and 20 touchdowns in his senior year. A celebration of life for Barnett is scheduled for Saturday in Kansas City, Kan., coinciding with what would have been his 21st birthday.
