This announcement follows comments made by US President Donald Trump, who stated he would not rule out reviewing the US's traditionally neutral stance on the disputed territory. Milei described the Malvinas cause as a 'sacred issue' for Argentines in a post on social media platform X.
Milei's remarks come after Trump indicated that the US might reassess its position regarding the Falklands, stating, 'I always review every position. That's just one of many.' Milei welcomed Trump's comments, which could suggest a shift in US policy towards the longstanding dispute between Argentina and the UK over the islands.
In addition to Milei's upcoming address, Argentine groups have filed a lawsuit to halt a British-Israeli oil project in the region, claiming it violates a United Nations resolution that calls for avoiding unilateral actions during ongoing territorial disputes. The lawsuit targets the Sea Lion oil field project, which involves Britain's Rockhopper Exploration and Israel's Navitas Petroleum, located approximately 137 miles from the Falklands.
The plaintiffs argue that the project should not proceed while the territorial dispute remains unresolved. Lawyer Enrique Viale stated that the complaint seeks to prevent the companies from starting or continuing operations related to hydrocarbon extraction.
The Falklands issue remains a sensitive topic in Argentina, highlighted by recent displays of national sentiment during sporting events. The 1982 conflict over the islands resulted in significant casualties, with 649 Argentines, 255 Britons, and three islanders losing their lives. British officials have reiterated their stance on the sovereignty of the Falklands, responding to recent Argentine claims with statements affirming British control.
