USS Abraham Lincoln Arrives at Laem Chabang Port After 270 Days at Sea

The USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier arrived at Laem Chabang port, near Pattaya, Thailand, on Wednesday morning after more than 270 days at sea. The ship's deployment has been marked by reports of deteriorating living conditions and mental health issues among the crew, including attempted suicides. The carrier, which has a crew of approximately 5,000, left California in November 2025 for duty in the South China Sea and was later rerouted to the Middle East amid US-Israeli military actions against Iran. A heavy security presence was noted at the port as the crew disembarked in groups of around 50, according to police colonel Anek Srathongyoo. The city of Pattaya, historically a rest-and-recreation destination for US troops, has increased security measures in anticipation of the sailors' arrival. Pattaya has evolved from a quiet fishing village into a popular tourist destination, known for its beaches and nightlife, which has faced scrutiny over sex tourism. Although sex work is illegal in Thailand, authorities often overlook it. Pattaya's mayor, Poramase Ngampiches, stated that preparations for the sailors will focus on safety and fair pricing, and that they will be prohibited from engaging in certain activities, including water sports and using cannabis. Buses have been arranged to transport the sailors between the ship and the city until the carrier departs on Sunday.
