Premier League Sets New Record for Summer Transfers in 2026

The Premier League has set a new record for spending during the summer transfer window, with four of its 11 most expensive signings occurring in this period. The total expenditure by Premier League clubs reached approximately 3.46 billion pounds ($4.67 billion), surpassing the previous record established last year. The transfer window closed on Tuesday at 11pm (22:00 GMT), with significant deals finalized just before the deadline. Notably, 38 percent of the transfers involved clubs within the Premier League, an increase from 30 percent in the previous year. This year, 475 million pounds ($640.1 million) was spent on deadline day alone, compared to 391 million pounds ($526.7 million) the previous year. Manchester City led the spending, acquiring Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernandez from Chelsea for 125 million pounds ($168.7 million). Fernandez became the first player to be transferred for amounts exceeding 100 million pounds ($134.7 million) twice. Liverpool followed closely, signing France forward Bradley Barcola from Paris Saint-Germain for 123 million pounds ($166 million). Chelsea spent 117 million pounds ($158 million) on England international Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa, while Manchester City also signed midfielder Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest for 116 million pounds ($156.6 million). The total spending by Manchester City under new manager Enzo Maresca reached 458 million pounds ($618.2 million). Chelsea's expenditure amounted to 349 million pounds ($471.1 million), while Tottenham spent 303 million pounds ($409 million). Newly promoted teams Ipswich, Coventry City, and Hull City collectively spent over 400 million pounds ($539.9 million) to strengthen their squads. Some transfers did not materialize, including Everton's failed move for Folarin Balogun and Chelsea's unsuccessful bid for Lamine Camara. Atletico Madrid retained Julian Alvarez despite interest from Barcelona and Arsenal, with Atletico's board stating there would be no negotiations with Barcelona regarding Alvarez's transfer.
