Russian drone attacks across Ukraine have resulted in at least one death and more than a dozen injuries, as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin issued threats regarding the conflict's escalation. Between Tuesday and Wednesday, Ukrainian authorities reported drone attacks in Kyiv, Odesa, and Dnipro, where a man's body was recovered from rubble. The conflict has intensified as it enters its fifth year following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The front lines in eastern and southern Ukraine remain largely stagnant, and U.S. efforts to negotiate a peace settlement have not yet yielded results.
Zelenskyy warned foreign airlines that Russian airspace is unsafe due to Ukrainian drone attacks, stating that "Russian airspace will effectively be closing" and emphasizing that military pressure is intended to push Russia towards peace negotiations. In response, Putin accused Zelenskyy of "state terrorism" and asserted, "We don’t negotiate with terrorists."
During a late-night news conference at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit in Kyrgyzstan, Putin addressed reports of Ukrainian military strikes using British-made drones, stating he would not rule out targeting British military facilities if the UK continues to support Ukraine with weaponry.
China and North Korea have provided military support to Russia, alongside Iran in previous years. The comments from both leaders coincided with European officials considering their response to what they describe as Russia's campaign to undermine European support for Ukraine. Germany has attributed a recent attempted attack at Leipzig/Halle airport to Russia, involving a drone loaded with explosives.
According to the Ukrainian Air Force, Russia launched 174 attack drones, including jet-powered drones that are difficult to intercept, along with two ballistic missiles and two plane-launched missiles overnight. In Odesa, the attacks damaged a 24-storey residential building, injuring eight people, including a child, and also affected office buildings and educational facilities. The barrage caused a power outage that disrupted electric public transport.
In the Kyiv region, two individuals were injured by shrapnel during morning attacks, marking the seventh consecutive day of assaults on the capital, although the latest attacks were less intense than previous ones. The strikes resulted in a fire at a warehouse and damage to an educational facility and a medical practice.
In Russia, the Defence Ministry reported that air defenses shot down 130 Ukrainian drones overnight across 11 regions, including Crimea and the Black Sea. Ukrainian drone attacks in Russia's Belgorod border region resulted in two deaths and 16 injuries, according to acting governor Aleksand Shuvaev, who noted that the region was targeted 140 times in 24 hours. Ukraine's long-range drones have aimed at Russia's oil sector and online retailers to impact the Russian economy and public sentiment regarding the war.
