Amazon to Cut Approximately 150 Positions in Northern California

Amazon is reducing its workforce by around 150 positions at its Northern California offices. This includes 70 jobs at the company's Sunnyvale office and 78 positions at the Bush Street office in San Francisco, as indicated in a notice filed with the Employment Development Department on August 28. The affected employees are expected to be laid off by October 20. Since October 2025, Amazon has eliminated approximately 30,000 corporate jobs through two significant rounds of layoffs, part of CEO Andy Jassy's strategy to streamline management structures and decrease bureaucracy. In June, some Amazon engineers criticized the company for investing billions into AI-driven data centers while cutting thousands of white-collar jobs. Patrick Schloesser, a software engineer at Amazon Web Services, stated at a Seattle City Council hearing that Amazon is reportedly spending $200 billion on capital this year, primarily for data centers and AI. Additionally, earlier this year, 135 corporate employees at Amazon's New York City offices were laid off in January 2026, followed by another 165 workers in the same location. In a related development, Uber announced a major organizational restructuring that will eliminate approximately 3,300 corporate roles, accounting for about 10% of its global workforce of 36,600. The cuts at Uber will mainly affect corporate and management positions, reducing management roles by 20% and ending full remote work for most employees.
