FAA Proposes Permanent Airspace Restrictions Near Trump’s Mar-a-Lago

<p>The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has proposed permanent flight rules around Donald J. Trump International Airport in Palm Beach, Florida, to secure the airspace near Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate. This proposal comes amid concerns over unauthorized aircraft and drones, which some experts believe may not be sufficient to deter determined adversaries.</p><p>The regulatory action was initiated at the request of the U.S. Secret Service, citing national security interests, as confirmed by an FAA spokesperson.</p><p>The proposed regulations include the establishment of a Special Flight Rules Area (SFRA). Aircraft flying below 2,000 feet within one nautical mile of the designated zone would be required to obtain explicit clearance, maintain two-way communication with air traffic control, and continuously transmit an assigned transponder code. Additionally, arriving and departing aircraft would need to meet strict security criteria before entering the airspace.</p><p>The increased security measures follow multiple threats against Trump, including a June incident where five suspects attempted to coordinate an ambush using explosive-laden drones aimed at targeting him and other high-profile officials during a UFC event at the White House.</p><p>However, some drone experts argue that the proposed regulatory measures are inadequate. Brett Velicovich, a former U.S. Army special operations intelligence analyst and drone expert, stated that government agencies need to adopt active interdiction capabilities rather than relying solely on airspace designations. He referenced a previous incident in Pennsylvania where a shooter conducted surveillance using a commercially available drone before an attack.</p><p>Velicovich emphasized the need for more counter-drone systems, stating that simply declaring an area a no-drone zone is not enough to deter malicious actors. The FAA proposal is open for public comment until October 2.</p><p>The White House has deferred questions regarding the security framework to the U.S. Secret Service, which has not provided additional comments at this time.</p>
