City Council Allocates $1 Million for 9/11 Education Fund for NYC Students

The New York City Council is allocating $1 million to fund educational initiatives about the September 11 attacks for students who were not alive during the event. This funding will support the 9/11 Memorial & Museum in expanding its educational programs. City Council Speaker Julie Menin stated, "It’s about teaching the next generation," emphasizing the importance of remembering the events and the unity displayed after the attacks. Menin will announce the funding at a wreath-laying ceremony at the Memorial, one week before the 25th anniversary of the attacks. The funding is part of the city’s Fiscal Year 2027 Budget and aims to enhance the museum's outreach to younger generations. Approximately 75% of the funds will be used for free field trips to the museum for 20,000 public school eighth graders, with each trip costing around $23 per student. The remaining $250,000 will support virtual educational programming, allowing students beyond New York City to engage with the museum's resources. The 9/11 Memorial & Museum has a history of providing workshops and training for teachers, and will launch a new digital learning experience in conjunction with the anniversary, featuring first-person accounts from the attacks. Menin highlighted the significance of these educational efforts in preserving the memory of the attacks and the resilience of the community.
