Gunman Injures Staff Member at Virginia Elementary School, Superintendent Reports Lockdown Procedures Were Effective

<p>A 19-year-old gunman entered Westwood Hills Elementary School in Virginia, located approximately 30 miles west of Charlottesville, on Wednesday morning, injuring an adult staff member before fatally shooting himself, according to authorities during a press conference.</p><p>The gunman, identified as Anthony Ignatiadis-Isabelle, was found dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound inside the school's library, where no students were present at the time, as stated by Waynesboro Police Chief David Shaw.</p><p>Waynesboro Public Schools Superintendent Jeffrey Cassell commended the school's lockdown procedures and training, stating they were effective during the crisis. He noted, "Our safety and security protocols and procedures worked. Staff notified law enforcement immediately, and our school executed lockdown procedures. Every student and staff member is safe and returned home to their families."</p><p>Cassell also expressed the emotional weight of the situation, saying, "If you don't get emotional today, you never will. Today is the day every school system hopes they never have to deal with. Please hug your children and your families this evening."</p><p>According to Cassell, Ignatiadis-Isabelle had not attended any school in the district. Authorities have not disclosed details regarding a possible motive or the weapon used, nor have they confirmed any connection between the gunman and the injured staff member, who has not been publicly identified but was treated and released from the hospital.</p><p>Police reiterated that the investigation is ongoing.</p><p>The last school shooting in Virginia occurred on August 15 at Virginia State University in Chesterfield County, resulting in injuries to five students. The suspect, 19-year-old Camron Harris, was arrested the same day.</p>
