New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s administration has reportedly established connections with approximately 200 online content creators as part of efforts to disseminate policy messages through social media platforms.

Mamdani, recognized for his social media engagement during his 2025 mayoral election, garnered a following through a volunteer-led initiative called “Creators4Zohran,” which promotes the mayor's agenda. From this group, Mamdani’s administration formed a Signal group chat with around 200 social media influencers, where the mayor’s team shares press updates and talking points for the influencers to consider posting, according to a report from Columbia Journalism Review.

The report indicates that some influencers have received compensation for participating in “messaging campaigns” with specific city agencies.

“Influencers in the Signal group are not paid by the city for their coverage, although some are paid by city agencies for work on particular messaging campaigns,” the Columbia Journalism Review report states.

The report further notes that details regarding these influencer relationships are not publicly disclosed. “The procurement notices signed with the marketing and advertising agencies that manage the influencer contracts do not list the names of content creators,” it continues.

Emilia Rowland, the Director of New Media and Cultural Communications, organized the Signal chat and disseminated information to the creators. Rowland's annual salary is reported to be $175,000, according to the New York Post.

The Washington Examiner has sought comment from Mamdani’s office regarding which content creators have been compensated. The report mentions that influencer campaigns by city agencies generally cost between $5,000 and $20,000, with payments made to influencers through contracts managed by marketing and advertising agencies that have agreements with the city.

During a press conference on Wednesday, the mayor addressed inquiries about his administration's connections with influencers and the records pertaining to influencer contracts.

“My administration will always strive to fully comply with all legal requirements, including those that relate to the preservation of city records,” Mamdani stated. “And if there are any departures from what is legally required, my administration will look into it immediately and take corrective action.”

The mayor also noted that his team recognizes that New Yorkers receive news through various channels.

“It is our responsibility to ensure that we communicate information from city government directly to the people of this city,” Mamdani said. “Whether that means to all of you, to TV, to radio, to social media, to content creators, and so on and so forth.”
