Cubs pitcher Trent Thornton reacts strongly after being removed from game

<p>Chicago Cubs relief pitcher Trent Thornton expressed frustration following his performance during a game against the Milwaukee Brewers on September 3, 2026, at Wrigley Field.</p><p>In the top of the fifth inning, with the Cubs trailing 6-5, Thornton was removed from the game after allowing three consecutive baserunners. He had previously entered the game in the fourth inning and struck out Luis Lara to end a scoring threat.</p><p>After the Cubs failed to score in the bottom of the fourth, Thornton began the fifth inning by striking out Christian Yelich. However, he then walked Joey Ortiz and allowed singles to Cooper Pratt and Jackson Chourio before being taken out of the game by manager Craig Counsell.</p><p>Upon entering the dugout, Thornton displayed his frustration by spiking his glove into the bench and shouting in anger.</p><p>Despite Thornton's struggles, his team managed to maintain the score at 6-5, as Ryan Rolison, who replaced him, retired the next two batters.</p><p>Thornton, in his first season with the Cubs, has performed well overall, recording a 3.40 ERA over 45 innings pitched in 44 games, including three saves.</p><p>The Cubs ultimately lost the game 9-5, marking their third loss in a four-game series against the Brewers. The Cubs (78-62) will aim to split the series in the final game against the Brewers (87-53) on Thursday at 7:15 p.m. ET.</p>
