Man Sentenced to Six Years for Attempted Rape in Canary Wharf

Syed Imam, 30, was sentenced to six years in prison for attempted rape following a conviction at Snaresbrook Crown Court. The incident occurred on March 14 near a train station in Canary Wharf, where security staff intervened to stop the attack on a vulnerable woman. Police arrived within 30 minutes and took Imam into custody, charging him within 24 hours. In bodycam footage, Imam expressed disbelief at his arrest, claiming he could not be the perpetrator and accusing security personnel of lying. Detective Constable Madeleine Powell emphasized the critical role of security staff in preventing further harm to the victim. The Metropolitan Police highlighted their commitment to tackling violence against women and girls, noting a 71 percent increase in arrests and charges for related offenses over the past year. The police also provided support to the victim throughout the investigation process.
