Off-duty NYPD officer accidentally shoots himself in leg at Bronx home

An off-duty New York Police Department (NYPD) officer accidentally shot himself in the leg while holstering his gun at his home in the Bronx on Tuesday afternoon. Police responded to a residence on Bailey Avenue in the Kingsbridge section shortly after 1 p.m. and found a 33-year-old man conscious and alert with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his left leg, according to authorities. The NYPD did not immediately release the officer's name, but family members identified him as Demitrious Caceres, as reported by News 12. Caceres, who serves at the 1st Precinct, was off-duty at the time of the incident. He was in stable condition when transported to Jacobi Medical Center by emergency medical services. A neighbor, Roseann Morales, noted the presence of police and ambulances at the scene, describing the area as unusually quiet. Caceres' brother, Jonathan, explained that Caceres was preparing to leave home and was attempting to holster his gun when it accidentally discharged. Jonathan expressed initial concern for his brother's well-being but later confirmed that Caceres is expected to recover. Caceres has been with the NYPD since January 2023, according to an online police database. Officers in New York City are required to carry their firearms even while off duty, as reported by News 12. Investigators were unable to process the scene until the homeowner granted permission, and police were seen leaving the residence with evidence bags around 6 p.m. The investigation is ongoing, according to police.
