Argentine President Javier Milei has proposed sanctions against companies drilling for oil near the Falkland Islands, also known as Las Malvinas. In a televised address on Thursday, Milei stated that he would seek urgent legislation to impose stricter penalties on companies operating in the area without approval from Buenos Aires. Argentina asserts sovereignty over the South Atlantic archipelago.
Milei's stance is perceived as an effort to garner support for his libertarian presidency, as the Falklands issue transcends political divisions in Argentina. The proposed sanctions would specifically target the Sea Lion project, a deep-sea oil field approximately 140 miles (220 kilometers) north of the islands, which is being developed by the UK’s Rockhopper Exploration and Israel’s Navitas Petroleum.
The president indicated that the sanctions would extend to suppliers, shareholders, and directors of the involved companies, potentially barring them from operating in Argentina entirely. Additionally, Argentine war veterans and environmental lawyers have initiated a lawsuit to halt the project, which Milei claims violates a United Nations resolution urging both Argentina and the UK to refrain from unilateral actions regarding the islands.
Britain’s Defence Secretary, Wes Streeting, commented that Milei’s remarks reflect more about domestic politics in Argentina than the situation regarding the Falkland Islands. He emphasized that the Falklands are British because the islanders have chosen to remain British, reiterating the UK’s unwavering commitment to the islands.
In 2013, a referendum showed that the approximately 4,000 islanders overwhelmingly voted to remain British amid sovereignty discussions. Rockhopper stated that it does not anticipate the recent developments to significantly impact the Sea Lion project, which aims to commence drilling this year and reach production by 2028.
Milei's revival of the Falklands dispute is interpreted as a strategy to counter domestic criticism regarding his relationship with United States President Donald Trump, which some critics have labeled as subservient. The Argentine president aims to demonstrate that this relationship could yield benefits, especially since Trump has suggested that the US might reconsider its neutral stance on the Falklands in favor of Argentina.
Trump recently refrained from confirming whether the US would support the UK in a future conflict over the Falklands, criticizing Britain for not doing enough to assist the US-led bombing campaign against Iran. The 1982 war between Britain and Argentina over the islands resulted in over 900 fatalities from both sides and continues to influence Argentina’s national identity, serving as one of the few unifying issues in its politically divided landscape.
Milei has faced allegations from opposition members that he is leveraging the Falklands dispute for political advantage as his approval ratings have dropped to 34 percent. Al Jazeera’s correspondent in Buenos Aires, Teresa Bo, noted that the timing of Milei's statements is influenced by both domestic politics and the situation in Washington, as his approval ratings decline amid public discontent with his austerity measures. The Falklands issue is one of the few topics capable of uniting Argentines across different political views.
