Philippine Court Issues Arrest Warrant for Vice President Sara Duterte

A Philippine court has issued an arrest warrant for Vice President Sara Duterte following allegations that she arranged the assassination of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. The warrant was issued on Friday by a court in Quezon City, near Manila, after judges denied a request from her lawyers to delay the warrant's execution. Duterte is accused of threatening to kill Marcos, his wife, and a former speaker of the House of Representatives. Bail has been set at $1,900 for each of the three charges of 'grave threat' filed against her last month. This situation adds to the legal challenges faced by the vice president, who is currently navigating an impeachment trial in the Senate. A guilty verdict in this trial could lead to her removal from office and jeopardize her presidential ambitions for 2028. The allegations trace back to November 2024, when Duterte reportedly stated that she had arranged for a hitman to kill Marcos and his family if she were to be killed. She has claimed that her comments were made out of concern for her safety following a fallout with the president. Her lawyer, Paul Lawrence Lim, stated that Duterte has 'no intention of evading the law and will continue to exercise all her legal remedies.' A spokesperson for the justice department confirmed the warrant, dismissing her legal team's argument that she cannot be prosecuted while the same conduct is under examination in her impeachment trial. Despite the arrest warrant, officials anticipate that she will post bail quickly. A conviction on the criminal charges could result in a maximum sentence of six months in jail, which is significantly lighter than the political ramifications she faces. The impeachment process in the House of Representatives is also based on charges related to corruption and unexplained wealth from her tenure as vice president and previously as education secretary. The Senate hearing, in which she denies any wrongdoing, has been ongoing for nine weeks. Duterte, the daughter of former President Rodrigo Duterte, and Marcos were running mates in the 2022 elections, but their alliance has since deteriorated into open conflict. Her father is currently in custody at the International Criminal Court in The Hague, awaiting trial for his administration's anti-drug campaign, which is estimated to have resulted in tens of thousands of deaths.
