ICE Issues Detainer for Driver Charged in Fatal Maryland Crash

<p>A man from El Salvador, Jose Antonio Caballero-Nolasco, has been charged with killing a mother and her daughter while driving under the influence the wrong way on a Maryland freeway. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has filed a detainer request with authorities in Montgomery County, according to the Department of Homeland Security.</p><p>Caballero-Nolasco faces multiple charges, including two counts of grossly negligent manslaughter and two counts of homicide by motor vehicle while impaired by alcohol, as well as life-threatening injury by a motor vehicle.</p><p>On August 29, Caballero-Nolasco was reportedly driving the wrong way on Interstate 270 when he collided head-on with a vehicle carrying four occupants. Musammat Shamima Begum, 46, and her 23-year-old daughter Areebah Jahin, both from Northern Virginia, were killed in the crash. Two other individuals, a 62-year-old man and an 8-year-old girl, survived and were transported to local hospitals.</p><p>Investigators indicated that alcohol impairment was a significant factor in the incident. Responding officers noted that Caballero-Nolasco exhibited signs of intoxication, including the smell of alcohol, bloodshot eyes, and slurred speech. Beer bottles were found in his vehicle, and he admitted to consuming alcohol prior to the crash.</p><p>Caballero-Nolasco was initially taken to a local hospital before being transferred to the Montgomery County Detention Center.</p><p>DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin commented on the incident, stating, "This tragedy was completely avoidable. Musammat Shamima Begum and Areebah Jahin should still be alive. ICE has lodged a detainer asking officials in Maryland to commit to not releasing this killer back onto our streets." He also expressed condolences for the victims and their family.</p>
