Canadian Fan Protests Trump's Renaming of Lake Ontario at FIBA Women's World Cup

<p>A Canadian fan attending Team USA’s game at the FIBA World Cup on September 4, 2026, expressed her disapproval of President Donald Trump’s recent executive order renaming Lake Ontario as Lake America.</p><p>The fan displayed a sign at the game that read, "Lake America?" in blue marker, and on the reverse side, she wrote "Lake Ontario!!" in red marker.</p><p>Trump’s executive order to rename the Great Lake was issued amid ongoing trade tensions between the United States and Canada. In a statement made in the Oval Office last month, Trump said, "The Lake of America was something I've been thinking about for a long time, actually. As you know, we took something called the Gulf of Mexico — we changed it — and now it's very routinely the Gulf of America."</p><p>The executive order described the United States as the "greatest protector" of the Great Lakes, stating, "Without the security and investment provided by the United States, this freshwater system would not be open for shipping, recreation, and responsible use to the same extent as it is today." Trump directed Interior Secretary Doug Burgum to update the Geographic Names Information System to reflect the name change.</p><p>While the name change may be accepted in the United States, it has not been well-received in Canada. The fan's protest coincided with Team USA's opening game of the FIBA Women’s World Cup, where they achieved a decisive victory over China, winning 94-61.
