Trump Commutes Sentence of Former Union Manager John Dougherty

President Donald Trump commuted the sentence of John "Johnny Doc" Dougherty, a former union business manager, as confirmed by Dougherty's lawyer, George Bochetto. Bochetto stated during a phone call with Fox News Digital on Friday morning that the commutation was signed by the president on Thursday. He indicated that Dougherty would be released soon and would not be required to pay approximately $1.6 million in restitution. Additionally, Dougherty will not face monitoring or house arrest, allowing him to be a free man. Bochetto described the commutation as a "compassionate release" and noted its bipartisan nature, expressing pride in Trump for the decision. He also mentioned the positive impact on Dougherty’s wife, who is gravely ill. Dougherty, who previously served as the business manager for the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 98, was sentenced in 2024 to six years in prison for embezzling funds from the union and for involvement in payouts to a Philadelphia City Council member. Former US Attorney Jacqueline Romero stated at the time of sentencing that Dougherty had betrayed the trust of his union and the public through corrupt practices. Romero, appointed by President Joe Biden, emphasized the need for integrity and accountability among union leaders and politicians.
