Israeli Forces Demolish Homes in Khirbet al-Tabban, Villagers Remain Determined to Rebuild

Israeli forces demolished 12 homes in Khirbet al-Tabban, located in the southern West Bank’s Masafer Yatta region, leaving approximately 70 residents homeless. The demolition occurred on Wednesday, with officials stating that the buildings were unauthorized. Nidal Younis, head of the Masafer Yatta Council, described the demolition as an attempt to erase the village, but emphasized the villagers' decision to remain on their land. Residents now face challenges including lack of shelter, drinking water, and sanitation facilities. Younis expressed concern that similar demolitions could occur in other villages following a 2022 Israeli court decision allowing for displacement in the area. Nasser Mahmoud Obeid, a villager, reported that Israeli forces ordered residents to leave by force, recalling a similar demolition in 1999. Despite the destruction, Obeid and others expressed determination to rebuild their homes. Suad Mohammed Obeid, who lived in the village for over three decades, described the emotional toll of the demolition on her family, particularly the children. She believes the demolitions are part of a broader strategy to make life difficult for Palestinians in the West Bank.
