Lotus of Siam, recognized by food critics as one of the top Thai restaurants in the United States, will close its location at the Red Rock Casino in Las Vegas after approximately four years of operation. The closure has been described as a mutual agreement between the landlord, Station Casinos, and the tenant, although local observers suggest underlying issues contributed to the decision. Scott Reuben, a local commentator, noted that the short lease duration is unusual, as most restaurant leases typically last five to ten years.
Lotus of Siam originally opened in the late 1990s in the Commercial Center near the Las Vegas Strip, with additional locations remaining operational. The Red Rock location, which opened in 2022, was managed by Bua Food Group, founded by Penny Chutima, daughter of chef and co-founder Saipin Chutima. Reports indicated that the restaurant faced challenges with food and service from the outset, leading to a family court battle that is still ongoing.
Court documents have revealed details about extravagant parties and menu changes that family members believed negatively impacted the restaurant's reputation. Station Casinos announced that the closure of Lotus of Siam will take effect on October 29, along with two other restaurants operated by Bua Food Group. The company plans to take over the Oyster Bar and will provide updates on future plans for the other spaces. Station Casinos declined to provide further comments on the closures.
In related news, Mulberry Street Pizza, based in Beverly Hills, will also close its location at Resorts World Las Vegas after five years, with the owner hinting at a potential future reopening in the area.
