Spencer Pratt Responds to Ryan Reynolds' Critique of 1980s Nostalgia

<p>Former reality TV star and California politician Spencer Pratt responded on Friday to actor <a href="https://foxnews.com/media/deadpool-star-ryan-reynolds-torches-1980s-nostalgia-calls-decade-f-ing-mess-people-forget" rel="noopener" target="_blank">Ryan Reynolds</a>, who criticized nostalgia for the 1980s.</p><p>Reynolds had faced backlash after describing the 1980s as "brutal" and a "f---ing mess" during the promotion of his Cold War-era film "Mayday" at its New York premiere. Critics questioned his characterization of the decade in light of his nostalgia-driven film.</p><p>In an interview with Variety, Reynolds stated, "When you get far enough away from a time period that’s quite distinct, there’s always a lovely feeling associated with it, almost like you pave over all the trauma with puppy dogs and ice cream." He added, "The '80s was a brutal, brutal time for people. It was a f---ing mess, and people forget that."</p><p>Pratt contended that the 1980s represented a time of cultural clarity compared to the present, where ideals of good and evil are less defined. He commented, "It makes perfect sense that Ryan Reynolds' view of the 80s is the inverse of what normal people think. In 80s movies, bad guys were villains. Today, the bad guys are the heroes. Hollywood now bends over backwards to redeem wickedness and mental illness," in a post on X.</p><p>He referenced films like "Top Gun" as emblematic of the hero generation, contrasting them with Reynolds' portrayal of anti-heroes. Pratt stated, "Choose your path carefully, young man." Reynolds has portrayed the anti-hero Deadpool, known for his irreverent humor and deviation from traditional superhero norms.</p><p>Pratt also shared a video discussing far-left politics and the perceived loss of classic heroes in American culture. Film critic Christian Toto commented on Pratt’s response, noting a cultural divide regarding the portrayal of anti-heroes in modern media.</p><p>Toto remarked, "Spencer Pratt's hot take suggests a sobering reality. Has pop culture's infatuation with anti-heroes had real-world implications?" He cited examples of films that present morally ambiguous characters as protagonists.</p><p>He added, "No decade is perfect. The '80s gave us the AIDS crisis, worries about nuclear war, the Challenger explosion and more. It also delivered great pop culture classics and lacked the cultural hand-wringing that weighs down so much of our lives today. It was a more simple time, and it's impossible not to miss that."</p><p>Theo Wold, a former assistant attorney general, provided a political perspective, stating, "Most of us remember the '80s, and it was a time when this country enjoyed greater social cohesion and wider individual freedoms than today, with relative economic prosperity." He suggested that Reynolds' Canadian upbringing may have influenced his views on the decade.</p><p>Wold criticized Reynolds for citing the Cuban Missile Crisis as a reason for the perceived brutality of the 1980s, suggesting that it overlooked other significant historical events.</p>
