Jamaica to File Petition for Slavery Reparations with King Charles During London Visit

The Jamaican government has announced plans to file a petition regarding slavery reparations with King Charles during a visit to London. The petition will request that Charles, as Jamaica's head of state, refer three questions about transatlantic chattel slavery to the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council, which serves as the highest court of appeal for the Caribbean island. Jamaica was a British colony until 1962 and was a significant location for the transatlantic slave trade, with an estimated one million Africans transported to the island between the 1500s and the 1800s. Culture Minister Olivia Grange is leading a delegation to London to formally lodge the historic petition. This filing is noted as the first time a Commonwealth State has utilized this legal route for reparatory justice. The British monarch has the authority under the Judicial Committee Act of 1833 to refer legal matters to the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council for an advisory opinion. Jamaica has also indicated plans to meet with the British Museum to discuss the repatriation of cultural artifacts taken from Jamaica. In recent years, the UK government has stated it will not provide reparations for slavery, while Caribbean leaders have called for a formal apology and measures such as debt cancellations. The petition will be filed on Monday, coinciding with a series of events, including an ecumenical church service focused on remembrance, justice, and repair at the New Park Road Baptist Church in south London. Following this, there will be a political engagement event in Westminster and an event with the National Windrush Museum. Minister Grange stated that the petition filing will be a milestone moment in Jamaica's history, emphasizing the right of Commonwealth citizens to petition the King regarding slavery reparations. Earlier this year, Reform UK leader Nigel Farage defended his party's proposal to block visa requests from British Overseas Territories if their governments demand slavery reparations, specifically naming Montserrat as a territory that would face migration limitations if such demands continue.
