The skin is covered in natural oils called skin lipids, which help maintain moisture and protection. As people age, the composition of these fatty acids changes, and the skin's ability to combat wear and tear diminishes, leading to increased exposure of these oils. When they oxidize, they release 2-nonenal.
Dr. Javid emphasizes that this change is not due to poor hygiene but rather a natural byproduct of aging. The levels of 2-nonenal can vary among individuals, influenced by factors such as genetics, skin microbiome, hygiene practices, and environment.
A Japanese study from 2001 found that 2-nonenal could be detected in subjects aged 40 and older, although Dr. Arshad Rather, a consultant geriatrician in London, notes that the scent does not become noticeable overnight but increases gradually with age.
Dr. Javid remarks that every stage of life has its own distinct scent, with babies having a sweet smell and teenagers developing a muskier odor due to hormonal changes.
