UN Appeals for $50 Million in Aid Following Floods in China and Nepal

The United Nations has launched a $50 million appeal to assist over 84,000 flood survivors in Nepal, amid concerns over cholera risks and sanitation challenges. The UN Resident Coordinator in Nepal, Lila Pieters Yahia, stated that communities along the China-Nepal border are struggling to understand the extent of the devastation caused by torrential floods on August 26, which destroyed roads, bridges, and hydropower dams. Yahia described the impact of the flooding, saying, "You lose your home, you lose your livelihood, you lose your loved one and you lose the breadwinner of your family. And you know, this happened in one to two minutes." The floods have resulted in at least 1,384 fatalities, with over 5,500 individuals reported missing in Nepal and the Tibet region of China, including more than 800 foreigners from at least 34 countries. Many affected communities remain isolated due to washed-away roads, with travel times significantly increased. Yahia also highlighted the risk of cholera and other communicable diseases, noting the deaths of 5,000 cattle and calling for urgent investment in sanitation, hygiene, and protection for vulnerable women and girls. She urged the international community to provide assistance, stating, "This is the time to help Nepal. We can’t leave them alone."
