Three Hikers Rescued After Getting Lost on Mount Shasta

<p>Three novice hikers were rescued after becoming stranded overnight in a steep canyon on California’s Mount Shasta, according to authorities. The hikers, from Roseville, reported to a Siskiyou County sheriff’s deputy that they relied on Google Gemini for route planning and packing advice.</p><p>The sheriff’s office indicated that this reliance on AI was a significant error, as the tool suggested they bring insufficient food and water for their journey, which was intended to be an eight-hour ascent but turned into a multi-day ordeal.</p><p>The group set up camp at approximately 8,400 feet on Saturday, August 29, and began their summit attempt at 3 a.m. on Sunday. They reached the summit at 7 p.m., which was seven hours past the recommended noon turnaround time, forcing them to descend in darkness.</p><p>About an hour later, the hikers contacted the sheriff’s office for assistance but strayed off the Clear Creek Route into Mud Creek Canyon. One hiker sustained a knee injury, which left the group stranded overnight.</p><p>The following morning, U.S. Forest Service climbing rangers located the hikers and provided medical assistance to the injured individual. Siskiyou County Search and Rescue volunteers were also dispatched, and all hikers returned safely to the trailhead.</p><p>The sheriff’s office advised that hikers should contact the local U.S. Forest Service Mount Shasta Ranger Station prior to their trips to obtain accurate information and cautioned against relying solely on AI for trip planning. They also recommended that climbers who have not reached the summit by noon turn back to ensure adequate daylight for descent.</p><p>Additionally, hikers are encouraged to carry multiple navigation methods and regularly verify their route instead of depending solely on a cellphone or GPS device. While the Clear Creek Route does not require technical mountaineering skills, hikers should be physically prepared for potential injuries, adverse weather, or an unexpected overnight stay on the mountain.</p><p>The sheriff’s office noted that serious accidents and fatalities have occurred when individuals became lost and inadvertently entered more hazardous areas, such as the Mud Creek drainage.</p>
