Hasan Piker Responds to Criticism from Democrats, Expresses Support for AOC in 2028

<p>Hasan Piker addressed the increasing criticism from some Democrats regarding his statements, stating, "My job is not to make the Democratic Party look good." The Twitch streamer has supported socialist candidates while creating challenges for the Democratic Party during a midterm election cycle. Piker, 35, has made controversial remarks, including defending Mao Zedong and comparing Zionism to "Nazism," which have led to mixed reactions within the party.</p><p>Piker mentioned that he has not been contacted by Democratic National Committee (DNC) officials for coordination. He stated, "I have not had a conversation with anyone from the DNC. That would be very funny." In an interview at the 2026 Socialism Conference in Chicago, he acknowledged that his long streaming sessions can lead to viral media moments that may be used against him.</p><p>One notable incident was his 2019 comment that America "deserved 9/11," which received widespread condemnation. Piker later clarified that he regretted the wording but maintained that his point was about U.S. involvement in the Middle East. He said, "It's not a controversial thing [to argue]. It was the language that I used that was controversial."</p><p>Piker's outspoken nature has garnered him support from the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), but many party leaders have distanced themselves from him. Democratic consultant James Carville described Piker as "an idiot" and stated, "he's not a Democrat. So, I don’t answer for idiots, and I don’t answer for people who are not Democrats."</p><p>Several key Democratic lawmakers, including House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Senators Cory Booker and Jon Ossoff, have criticized Piker's past remarks. While campaigning for progressive candidates, Piker noted that some allies have advised him to tone down his rhetoric to improve electoral chances.</p><p>Piker expressed frustration that the media has not demanded similar condemnations from establishment Republicans. He actively supported Abdul El-Sayed, a progressive candidate who won a primary against establishment-backed Rep. Haley Stevens in August. However, this association has led to scrutiny of El-Sayed.</p><p>Piker stated he believes El-Sayed will win in the upcoming election, but if he loses, he is willing to accept blame. Looking ahead to the 2028 presidential election, Piker confirmed his support for Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez if she decides to run for the Democratic nomination. He remarked, "I think she's great," acknowledging potential challenges she may face.</p><p>He also predicted that even those Democrats currently criticizing him may seek to leverage his platform in their future campaigns.</p>
