Residents of Willows Green, near Felsted, Essex, have raised concerns about an illegal traveller site that has been in place for four months. Approximately 60 villagers confronted Uttlesford District Council, questioning why the site has not been cleared, especially in light of a similar situation in Sawbridgeworth where authorities acted quickly to remove an illegal development. The travellers reportedly dumped 50 loads of hardcore onto the field without consent over the May bank holiday weekend.
Local resident Tracy Williams expressed frustration at the council's inaction, stating that the land was agricultural and had been illegally built on. She described the situation as a failure of local authorities to respond adequately. The council indicated that there was a pending court action regarding the illegal site, which limited their ability to comment.
Councillor Neil Gregory noted that the matter is under the High Court, while Councillor John Evans explained that the response in Sawbridgeworth was different due to threats of violence and racism during that protest. Residents were informed that Uttlesford District Council had applied for a High Court injunction to stop the traveller site, but it had been ignored.
Sherrie Smith, chief executive of Gypsies and Travellers Essex, stated that local authorities are not meeting their legal obligations to provide designated traveller sites. She emphasized that the families living at the site feel they have been treated unfairly and that local authorities should fulfill their responsibilities. A statement from the residents of the traveller site indicated that there is a valid planning application under review and called for the proper planning process to be followed.
