Rescue Operations Underway After Building Collapse in New Delhi Results in Six Fatalities

A multistorey building in New Delhi collapsed, resulting in at least six fatalities and trapping dozens of individuals. The incident occurred near a Delhi University campus in Satya Niketan on Sunday. Rescue teams are actively searching through the rubble for survivors. The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) reported that it treated several victims, stating, "Out of the 10 patients, five were brought dead, while one patient who was in critical condition later succumbed to his injuries." Crews from India’s disaster response agency, police, and firefighters are using earthmovers and detection dogs in their efforts. A nearby building was evacuated due to concerns about potential collapse. Fire officer Abhilash Malik indicated that up to 40 people may still be trapped under the debris. The number of survivors and the cause of the collapse remain unclear. A video from a trapped individual has circulated online, showing onlookers calling for help. Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta emphasized the importance of saving lives, stating, "The most important thing for us is to save the lives of these students. Rescue operations will carry on." She also assured that those responsible would be held accountable. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's office expressed condolences and stated that authorities are assisting those affected. Building collapses are common in India during the rainy season from June to September, with a similar incident occurring the previous day in northern India, although no casualties were reported. In a previous incident in 2025, at least 11 people died when a residential building collapsed in northeastern New Delhi.
