The wife of British racing driver Ollie Millroy expressed disbelief that he survived a crash during a China GT event at Shanghai International Circuit, where his Ferrari caught fire after colliding with two other cars. Millroy, 36, was rescued by rival Dutch driver Loek Hartog, who unbuckled his seat belt and jumped out of his vehicle to assist.
Video footage captured Millroy's car spiraling off the track, engulfed in flames and smoke. Millroy's wife, Fern, provided an update on his condition from the hospital, stating that he underwent several hours of surgery for injuries including a broken hand, six broken ribs, and a collapsed lung.
Fern thanked Hartog for his actions, calling him a 'real life superhero.' She reported that Millroy is receiving good care and is on high-flow oxygen as he recovers.
Hartog, 23, also expressed gratitude for the support he received from the racing community and shared his thoughts on the incident. He emphasized the importance of ensuring that such accidents do not happen again in the future. Millroy, from his hospital bed, thanked Hartog for saving his life and acknowledged the severity of his injuries, which include five broken ribs and a bruised lung.
Hartog stated that he felt compelled to act when he saw Millroy's car in flames, believing that the driver might not be able to escape on his own. He described the experience as frightening but maintained that many would have acted similarly in his position.
