Israeli Ambassador Criticizes NYC Mayor Ahead of Netanyahu's UN Visit

<p>Israeli Ambassador to the United Nations Danny Danon stated that New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is "sowing chaos" ahead of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s visit to the U.N. General Assembly on September 24. Danon made this remark after Mamdani called for protests during Netanyahu's speech at the U.N. General Assembly.</p><p>Danon said, "No one can ignore Mayor Mamdani. Instead of welcoming world leaders and ensuring the city functions properly, he is doing the opposite." He added that Mamdani's actions would make it more difficult for New Yorkers and visitors due to the planned demonstrations.</p><p>Mamdani's office did not respond to a request for comment regarding a potential meeting with Netanyahu. Danon expressed skepticism about the likelihood of such a meeting, stating, "I don't think the prime minister wants to meet with him." Mamdani has previously referred to Netanyahu as a "war criminal" and acknowledged that he cannot have Netanyahu arrested despite earlier campaign promises.</p><p>During a press conference in July, Mamdani emphasized the importance of protest in New York City, stating, "One of the bedrocks of our city is protest." He affirmed that New Yorkers should be able to express their opinions freely.</p><p>Netanyahu, in a subsequent interview, confirmed his intention to attend the U.N. meeting and criticized Mamdani, calling him a "hate-spewing elected official." Danon also commented on Israel's military actions, stating that Israel must "finish the job" in Gaza and that Hamas must disarm for peace to be achieved.</p><p>Danon concluded by expressing pride in Israel's achievements at the U.N., stating that Israel's fight against groups like Hamas and Hezbollah is not only for its own security but also for the security of Western democracies.</p>
