Rob Lowe discusses competition with Tom Cruise for film roles

In an interview with the New York Post, Lowe stated, "That dastardly Tom Cruise was always a nemesis." He recalled auditioning for films such as 'Jerry Maguire' and 'Top Gun,' where he recognized Cruise's potential for success. Despite missing out on major roles, Lowe became a prominent figure in the Brat Pack, starring in films like 'St. Elmo's Fire,' 'The Outsiders,' 'Class,' and 'Oxford Blues.' However, he expressed regret for not being cast in any John Hughes films, particularly 'Ferris Bueller’s Day Off,' which went to Matthew Broderick. Lowe mentioned that Hughes was not interested in casting him, stating, "John Hughes never got what I was selling." He theorized that his established fame may have been a factor, suggesting that Hughes preferred to cast lesser-known actors to help them gain recognition. Lowe's early career established him as a teen heartthrob, and he later achieved success in television with roles in 'The West Wing' and 'Parks and Recreation,' earning nominations for Emmy and Golden Globe awards.
